The goal of this project is to ...

Right now this project just has three members. Roxana Stitt and Catherine Christensen. Thank you, MaryAnn (Ford) Thomas for joining us in this project!.

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Identify databases that translate archaic medical terms to modern terminology (apoplexy = stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, bad blood = syphilis)
  • Help decipher "Doctor" writing and look up IDC codes on death certificates.
  • Identify websites or other sources that can help locating cause of death (ex. Your relative lived in California and disappeared from the face of the earth before the 1920 Federal Census. Were there major earthquakes near their residence? The Great Blizzard of 1888 lasted three days. It caused deaths from Chesapeake Bay to Maine. Could your relatives have been affected?)
  • Where else can we look or what assistance can we provide to help determine cause of death?

I admit I am new to Wikitree, but I am working diligently to identify the cause of death in my ancestry and know I can't cover all of these bases alone. So far, I've found dropsy, apoplexy, St. Vitus' Dance, marasmus, and decrepitude. I've never created a new project, so please be patient with me as I learn. Will you join me? Please post a comment here on this page, in G2G using the project tag, or send me a private message. Thanks!

I am interested in this project and would like to join! I am a former nurse and I have found myself puzzling over old-fashioned medical terms in my family tree. It's fascinating!
